A Journey into the Maritime Profession from Cadet to Engineer

We are pleased to share the story of Nikita Volkov, whose path reflects dedication, growth, and the importance of the right support at the start of a maritime career.

My name is Nikita Volkov, I am 22 years old, and I come from Odesa, Ukraine – a maritime city that largely shaped my career path. Although there were no seafarers in my family, the atmosphere of the city, its ports, vessels, and constant connection to the sea inspired me from an early age to pursue this profession.

After finishing school at 17, I enrolled in a maritime college in Odesa. During my studies, I realized that gaining practical experience was just as important as theoretical knowledge, so after a year and a half, I decided to go to sea for my first training.

After receiving my initial seafarer documents, I prepared my CV and began searching for opportunities independently. I came across OJ Crew through online vacancies, submitted my application, and quickly received a response. This marked the beginning of my journey toward my first contract.

From the very start, I felt I could trust the company. As someone without experience, this was especially important. I received support at every step — from guidance on documentation to constant communication and advice. It was more than a formal process; I truly felt supported and that my progress mattered.

I would like to express special thanks to my Crew Manager, Natalia Petrova. She played a significant role in my development as a seafarer, providing guidance, support, and encouragement throughout. Her professionalism and personal approach gave me confidence and reassurance that I was not alone in this journey.

My first contract as an Engine Cadet was a very positive experience. I joined a supportive crew, where colleagues were open to sharing their knowledge. It was the moment when theory turned into real skills, confirming that I had chosen the right profession.

Working on different vessel types gave me valuable experience. Container ships operate at a fast pace, requiring discipline, precision, and quick decision-making. Refrigerated vessels, on the other hand, have their own specifics, including longer port stays, which offer a different working rhythm.

Throughout my career, I have always aimed to learn from more experienced colleagues and give my best on every assignment. On each vessel I served — both as a cadet and later as a junior officer — I received positive evaluations and recommendations, which motivated me to continue progressing.

By the age of 21, I was promoted to the position of Third Engineer on refrigerated vessels. This is an important milestone for me, considering I started my career at 19 as an Engine Cadet.

Today, I continue to develop professionally with clear goals ahead. My main objective is to become a Chief Engineer as early as possible. I understand this requires dedication, discipline, and continuous learning, and I am fully committed to this path.
